I was thinking the other day how Wicked, the musical, was inspired by a book. And the book Wicked was inspired by a movie (Wizard of Oz) which was itself inspired by a series of children’s books. So I started scribbling out a grid, and soon I was filling it in, and then I thought it might be a fun thing to post and see if other people also enjoy filling it in. So here you go:

Smile: It’s 2011
I have been away for 10 days, and so have not posted for a while.
Here is a smile from my vacation. It’s a gauge from a geyser simulator at Old Faithful. We had an amazing time among the steamy geysers and deep fluffy snow in the park. It was a pleasure to be in such a unique spot for the holiday week.
I hope you are having a fun start to the new year!

Alphabet of Vehicles
In keeping with this month’s travel theme: Can you think of a vehicle that begins with each letter of the alphabet? Please use generic types of transportation, not brand names of specific vehicles. Also, try to make each answer one word only.
I will post my list on Wednesday.

Answers: A Happy Alphabet
I found reasonable synonyms for “Happy” that begin with every letter except X and Y. Seems like there ought to be a Y-word out there. Here’s my list:
Animated, blissful, cheery, delighted, ecstatic, fortunate, glad, hopeful, intoxicated, jolly, keen, loving, merry, nonplussed, overjoyed, pleased, quick, rosy, sunny, thrilled, upbeat, victorious, whimsical, and zestful.
This was a fun challenge. There were several good words for a few high-point Scrabble letters, like J and Z, and there were only one or two decent words for some common letters like R and S.

A Happy Alphabet
Can you think of 26 words, one beginning with each letter of the alphabet, that are synonyms for HAPPY?
I will post my answers on Wednesday, and I hope to have 23 words or better.
Cheers!

Answers: Alphabet Challenge
Here’s my list of 25 two-word phrases beginning with the word BLUE, and in which the second word begins with each letter of the alphabet (except X):
Blue angels, blue book, blue chip, Blue Devils, blue earth, blue fish, blue grass, blue hair, blue ice, blue jeans, Blue Knob (in PA, I hadn’t heard of it, but I can’t think of a better answer for K), blue light, blue moon, blue Nile, blue ox, blue pencil, blue quartz (also a bit obscure), blue ribbon, blue screen, blue tooth, Blue Umbrella (another obscurity, a children’s book and movie), blue velvet, blue whale, blue yonder, and blue zones (places where people live exceptionally long lives).
I didn’t find any strong answers for X. Or K, Q, or U, really.

Alphabet Challenge: Blue ___
Now that we are into June and blue skies should be the norm for a while, I got to thinking about two-word phrases with the pattern “blue ___.”
Can you think of 26 common two-word phrases in which the first word is “blue” and the second word starts with each letter of the alphabet?
I hope to have phrases for all but one or two letters by Wednesday, when I’ll post my list.

Alphabet challenge: Games
Can you name a one-word board game or a card game for every letter of the alphabet? For example, A could be Authors or Aggravation.
I’ll post my list on Wednesday, and I hope to have answers for most letters.
Play on!

Smile: Computer
Being on spring break, I haven’t been staring at the front of one of these for a few days…
Have a great weekend.
