I found 27 words that fit the RL Constant Consonants challenge from Monday: aerial, aerially, airily, areola (plural areolae, and the same as areole), aril, aural, aurally, earl, early, eerily, oral, orally, oriole, rail, rally, real, really, reel, relay, rely, rile, roil, role, roll, royal, royally, and rule. Obscure words that fit include ariel (a gazelle), orlo (a plinth), orle (a heraldry term), roily (turbulent), and ruly (opposite of unruly).

Constant Consonants: RL

How many words can you think of that contain only the consonants RL, in that order, and no others? ROLL is a valid answer, but RURAL would not count (it repeats the R with a vowel between). For the full rules, click the link at the upper right.

I’ll post my list on Wednesday. I expect to have about 30 words. Happy puzzling!

Smile: Tag

I found a new bike today after visiting: a semi-creepy person selling 100 bikes out of a barn in the country, a fancy-pants shop in the newly trendy part of town, and a funky alterna-bike place. I was happy to find what I wanted behind door number three, and happy to leave some of my money there to keep them working another day. I will now register and triple lock my new bicycle.

Smiles!

Answers: PRL

Answering Monday’s challenge, I found only 13 words with the consonants PRL, in that order, and no others: Apparel, parlay, parole, parolee, payroll, pearl, pearly, peril, poorly, prole, puerile, purely, and purl. Obscure words that fit the requirements include parrel and parol.

In other news, my bicycle was stolen today. Grr!

Constant Consonants: PRL

Today’s letters for Constant Consonants are PRL. April would be one possible answer, except that it wouldn’t count because it is capitalized. How many words can you think of that contain the consonants PRL, in that order, and no others? Full rules are at the link at the upper right.

I will post my list on Wednesday.

Smile: Fence

It’s not a fence really, but a barrier in a parking lot. I took this photo when I was in Florida a couple of weeks ago.

Constant Consonants: PLT

Today’s constant consonants challenge uses the letters PLT. How many words can you think of that use the consonants PLT in that order, and no others? PLATE is one valid answer. PETAL, however, does not work because the L and the T appear in the wrong order. Full directions are at the link to the upper right.

I expect to have a list of about 20 by Wednesday, when I’ll post the answers.

Smile: Tent

I waited all winter for this tent to be erected again. I think it’s used as something of a greenhouse. Whatever it is, it has a nice smile.

tent_smile1The answer word for yesterday’s quiz is CARROT.

Have a great weekend!

Friday Miscellany: Six Guesses

Here’s a quick quiz for today. If you can guess the mystery word by the fourth guess, that’s better than most; by the third guess, that’s amazing. If you guess on the first guess, you’re probably Dutch or Japanese.
