Initial Inclination: P.S.

Because we’re almost at the maddest point of March (come to think of it, it is the maddest point, because the rest of March Madness occurs in April), I thought this week’s word puzzle should be basketball related.

Therefore, a trivia question: Which NCAA college basketball coach has the most wins? You may have already seen the hint in the initials above.

Answer: Having just won her 1,000th game on Feb. 5, 2009, it’s Pat Summitt, coach of the Tennessee Lady Volunteers.

How many people can you think of who share the initials P.S.? Please consider only real, well-known people (i.e. not characters, and not personal friends). I’ll post my list on Wednesday.

Cartoon: Whale

It’s been a couple of weeks since I’ve posted a cartoon. I have a few others in mind, I just haven’t gotten around to drawing them digitally. Below today’s drawing is my list from Monday’s challenge.

Constant Consonants: DRS

Besides being the abbreviation for doctors, it occurs to me that DRS is a good combination for a consonants puzzle.

How many words can you think of that use the consonants DRS in that order, and no others? In today’s case, plural nouns and present tense verbs are okay, but as usual, capitalized words are not. See the link at the upper right for complete rules.

I’ll post my answers on Wednesday.

Smile: Dispenser

This smile is from a public bathroom. I think from the top of the toilet paper dispenser. Which proves that smiles are everywhere!

Friday Miscellany: History Mystery

Here’s a fact-based logic puzzle for your Friday:

History Mystery

Put on your brainy beanie (your cogitation cap?), and see if you can sort out these facts about United States history:

Of the three former presidents John Adams, Thomas Jefferson, and Calvin Coolidge, one was born on July fourth and two died on July fourth.

If Adams was born on the day before Halloween, and Coolidge died four days after the new year, which two presidents died on July fourth, and which one was born on that day?

B and B answers

My list of phrases that fit the pattern B__ and B__ is below. I have a feeling there are a lot more “in the language” phrases out there, so I may add to this over time.

Here are seven phrases: Bailey’s and Bushmill’s (this has an Irish connection as well, for this week), Beavis and Butthead, bed and breakfast, beef and barley, black and blue, and bread and butter. I didn’t include the birds and the bees and a couple of others because they use the word “the.”

Return a Phrase: B and B

Bed and breakfast are two of the best parts of the day. Bed and breakfast is also one valid answer to today’s challenge.

How many phrases can you think of that fit the pattern B__ and B__? I will post my list on Wednesday.

In the meantime, happy Saint Patrick’s Day!

Smile: Clippers

Here’s an example of a smile that most people probably have in their house and never look at as a face…. Okay I’d guess most people would never think of looking at most of the things I’ve photographed as faces. Anyway, here it is.

Friday Miscellany: Logical Thinking

This puzzle was originally intended for an audio book that I wrote. It’s a “lateral thinking” or mini mystery type of puzzle. Enjoy!
