Constant Consonants: BLD

The theme this week is “cutting tools,” so one possible answer to the consonants puzzle is BLADE.

Please refer to the rules of the game, at the upper right, if you’re not familiar with them. You have until Wednesday to think of as many words as you can that contain the consonants BLD in that order, and no other consonants.

On October 1st, I’ll post the 21 words that I found.

Have a great week!

Smile: Saw

Here’s a great smile I found on a table saw. The week’s theme is about tools, specifically cutting tools.

The answer to Friday’s miscellany puzzle is below the picture.

Answer to Friday’s puzzle:

After all of the extra words are taken away from the wall, the remaining words spell finish the fact like this: The (untrue) fact that The Great Wall of China can be seen from the moon was printed in Richard Halliburton’s Second Book of Marvels “THIRTY-ONE YEARS BEFORE THE FIRST MOON LANDING.”

In fact, I learned, the Great Wall can’t even be seen very well from a low orbit, as many man-made structures can, because it is made out of materials that are similar to the earth around it.

Today’s puzzle is a word puzzle that reveals a fact about the Great Wall of China when solved.

Happy Friday!

Cartoon: Wall

Here’s this week’s cartoon, for the “Wall” theme. I’ve always thought that pages that say “This page intentionally blank” are goofy, because they’re not what they say they are. I’ve got a few cartoon ideas percolating that play on that goofiness. I’m not sure this is the best incarnation, but it’s the one you get to see today.

Answers to Monday’s GRT consonancy are below the cartoon.

Here are the 12 words that I found that use only the consonants GRT, in that order: egret, garret (attic), garotte (used to strangle), grate, great, greet, grit, gritty, groat, grotto, grout, and gyrate.

Constant Consonants: GRT

“GRT,” you say. “What does that have to do with the ‘Wall’ theme?”

Aah. Now you see it (don’t you)? It’s for the GREAT wall of China (GREAT being one valid answer).

See how many words you can think of that use the consonants GRT in that order, and no others. If you need to review the rules to the puzzle, they are listed at the upper right. I’ll post my list of 12 words on Wednesday.

Enjoy your week.

Smile: Wall

This photo is of a building where I live (Eugene, OR) that has a smile on it when you look at it from the right angle. I’d like to get a better shot of it one day, when the shadows don’t interfere so much.

This week’s theme, therefore, is “Walls,” which may seem offbeat and difficult to stick to, but I’ve had a wall cartoon idea for a long time and a Friday puzzle that fits as well.

As promised, here is the answer to the Webbed Connections puzzle from Friday:

The words that fit in the grid are, alphabetically, from top to bottom: cybeRspace, digErati, gaTeway, lInux, netwoRk, passWord, servEr, sPam, sYsop, and websiTe. The shaded (capitalized here) letters, reading from bottom to top, complete the quote with the word TYPEWRITER.

Friday Miscellany: Webbed Connections

Here’s a puzzle that was initially part of a book proposal that included several meta-puzzles. That is, the answers to a group of puzzles, examined together, formed another puzzle. It is Internet-related, apropos of this week’s Electronics theme. I’ll post the answer over the weekend.

Cartoon: Electronics

I’ve had this cartoon in my head for a while. Some people get it, some people don’t. But it does fit the “Electronics” theme quite nicely.

Spoiler warning: Answers to Monday’s B.F. initial puzzle are below.

These are the 12 famous people I found whose initials are B.F.

Brett Favre, Bobby Fischer, Bridget Fonda, Betty Ford, Bill Ford, Bob Fosse, Ben Foster, Barney Frank, Bonnie Franklin, Brendan Fraser, Betty Friedan, Bill Frist, and (bonus number 13) Buckminster Fuller (even though Buckminster was his middle name).

Initial Inclination: BF

I’m taking a break from the consonants puzzle again this week for another famous initials puzzle. The initials this time are B.F. and Benjamin Franklin, a great inventor and a student of electricity, fits the theme of Electronics. How many famous people can you think of (over the next two days) whose initials are B.F.?

I will list the 12 people that I came up with on Wednesday.

Have a great week!

P.S. The smile photo from the weekend is of a set of headphones.

Smile: Electronics

The theme for this week is “Electronics.” In reviewing this smile photo, I thought it would make a good general puzzle as well: Can you tell what this is a picture of?

I’ll post the answer tomorrow.
