Limitations

This week’s theme: DRINKS

Some notes on limitation:

At a picnic yesterday, a friend said (I’m paraphrasing) that “The curse of America is that there are too many choices.” He referred to an article in Parade magazine (“of all places,” he said) about how having too many choices makes us less happy. (“Yes!” I thought, “It’s so true!”) A minute of Googling revealed the quote in Parade to be from a book by Barry Schwartz called “The Paradox of Choice: Why More is Less.”

I think there’s a curse of freedom with creativity as well. When I’m given a completely blank notebook, I freeze. But, if I have to research Argentina and write a 32-page puzzle book about it, I am absorbed and productive in minutes.

To that end, I will be self-imposing limitations, or themes, for each week’s posts. Here’s how I picture the pattern: Each weekend I will introduce a new theme and post a photo (most often a smile image) based on the theme. Monday, I will have a short word puzzle based on the theme. Wednesday, I’ll show a cartoon with that theme. Friday, I will have a grab-bag puzzle again, theme-related, to force that happier, limited-choice scenario.

So, to get back to the start, this week’s theme is DRINKS, and the photo, which I’ve had around for a while, is below. My working subtitle for the weekend photos is “Your Daily Grin” (It’s not your daily grind), although to start, the photos aren’t daily, they’re weekly.

Today's grin. Got it?

Keep smiling.
